A Letter to My Client Who Refuses to Pay

In response to a client who gave me reasons after reasons why he felt that he didn't need to pay for my service over a span of 2 months, here's what I told him:

Dear JSonernberg,

I appreciate the thought of you working long term with me. Really made me weep.

In response to your replies:

It's been a fruitful 2 months wait. Along the way, I decided that I needed to impress you with rather fancy ideas, so as to have you sign the contract with me and pay me well. Disregarding the fact that you have still not paid me for work/samples I completed late last year and earlier this year despite several reassurance of partnership and interest in my works and possible payments, I would be totally delighted to spend my free time creating logos and website for you based on further bleak andnvague promises of future possible payment. I've even made a pie chart to show my ever blasting enthusiasm towards the projects!

I actually appreciate that loads of goodwill vibes you sent to me that day. Acceptance came from Coffee Bean that very day you bought me that delicious apple snapple. With the words "swee lar!" and "this is it" and "I'm going to register my company some time this week, maybe tomorrow." gave me a sense of light in the tunnel and some warmth in the cold. It burst this balloon full of confetti within my heart and gave me some light of enlightenment that my work is actually taken in by a client so quickly. With the artwork sleeping in yours and my email account right now, I actually question your dissatisfaction with the prices I have quoted as I believe the original charge for your work by the agency is around 1500$ for the logo package, and 4000$ at least for the site, or maybe 2000$ for the workpress professional template. I understand that you may have your budget cuts, but think of me as well, I'm quite pitiful trying to pull ends together without a Mercedes Benz and DSLRs in my life! ): With my dad retiring and my mom feeling all menopause-y, life has been really hard on us recently. While the actual process of the logo making would have consisted of two minutes pretending to consider a typeface other than Helvetica, Arial or Comic Sans and ten minutes putting it together, this is standard design industry practice and listed under Direction, Design and Build on the invoice.

In a moment of stupidity, I once agreed to design e-cards in exchange for singing classes. Contrary to what they would have you believe, you cannot actually warm people's heart like the sun with your awesome voice as this would result in severe burns and your audience would need to be over one hundred and fifty million miles away from earth. My favourite song is actually ones by Jay Chou. Unfortunately, until I can pay my bills by singing songs and expressing emotional intonations through the awesome rubato that only Pavarotti could do so well and legendary hand gestures that are rather Fei Yu Qing-esque when I sing, I will need cash and downpayments.

"I respect that you have your price standards and i hope you understand I have my budget as well."
Really appreciate that respect. Budget is not a problem. 50 cents for an apple, 10 cents for the seeds.

"I hope to work long term with you but your justifications to this matter and price really is a concern to our decision."

Bottom line is, I really prefer face to face sit-down-at-somewhere discussions rather than talking over the phone as I can see and feel the expressions of my clients, talk to them more personally, hold their hand in reassurance when situations get sucky, and ultimately and most importantly, hand them the contract to seal the deal, whereas the phone is just like a machine that kills all the human interaction and hides all the needed facial expressions. Over the years I've been cheated by clients who offer very genuine offers but back out in the end, leaving me rather crushed, like that client who dumped me after making me design drafts of his logos repeatedly and told me he'd engaged someone else. The nightmare is really scary. If you could, I'd really appreciate a date from you, anytime but Thurs and Fri morn till 1pm, to discuss and seal the prices, sign the contract and start the deal with deposits. I understand that your buddy has to serve the honourable manly duties for the government while you're probably busy with some other stuff in life like buying bread for the next day. 15 minutes is all I need actually: to pass you the contract, seal the deal and leave. I really am thankful that you have the thoughts of working long term with me. But with this experience, I'm also facing the wall, scratching my head and questioning my own abilities while banging my head against the wall occasionally with loads of emotions asking myself why. I really hope to get these assignment sealed, paid for and done in the matter of a month's time as I have my scary final projects to attend to, they are just like babies, they need constant mother supervision, hence I'm afraid my energy might not last me through should I handle both at the same time. They are both like babies to me...and babies are scary.

Any future projects could be discussed after we have closed this thing nicely at the end with everyone satisfied here.

Before I go, here's a friendly CNY myth I read online recently...everyone has to pay off all the debts before the new year's here. Sources said that unpaid debts could lead to a year full of poverty...D: This leaves me very scared as I remembered in 1995, I didn't manage to repay my primary school classmate the 10cents I borrowed a week before CNY, and my wallet got stolen a few times that year...true story.

Thought I'll do a fashion blog post today. Recently been into fashion and layouts, so dive into this fashion craze with me as I take you through to looks I created for Spring/Summer 2011! (:

Was looking at a few brands out there and I realise, Tod's has never failed to impress everyone with their simple and elegant Italian designs. For many years, it's been one of the top notch brands for leather products such as shoes and bags.

Well, recently I came across this elegant yet versatile bag on Reebonz. Thought I'll share it with you all.

The Tod's D-Styling Small Satchel is a sophisticated leather design that's finished with a subtle sheen, with a double top handles, removable shoulder strap, zipper closure, inside zip pocket, metal feet, and it's fully lined. It's good through all seasons and seems like it will never run out of fashion.

It comes in a few colours like black, beige, grey and white. But I favour the white most as it matches with any other outfits. Hey! White bags are like LBDs. Every lady should have one stored in her closet, especially during the spring season. (:

So I was looking around for spring looks that's suitable for Singapore's weather and fashionable to match with this treasure I'm recommending here. Well, I managed to find some colours of the season handpicked by designers instead! Honeysuckle is the official pantone of 2011. Designers feels that the flirtatious Honeysuckle is a feel-good hue that brings a festive sense of playfulness to this season’s palette. This vibrant pinkish-red for both apparel and cosmetics makes consumers feel alive, and is a perfect post-winter pick-me-up!

So that was what I found from the runway shows. I love the dress! Was inspired to do a look for local Office Ladies, well, since I'm about to join the workforce soon in 6 months' time, and so I came up with...

It's simple, bright and youthful, yet poised to meet with any challenges of the day. It brings out the spring elements and cheers anyone around them with the therapeutic spring colours. It somehow reminds me of floral blooms...like a meadowful of flowers singing to you. Don't you think this looks a little retro, as well? Like the old-times American ladies on the streets in the 1950-60s! And note how well the Tod's satchel blended in with the outfit. It doesn't contradict with the brightness of the dress and accessories but compliments and enhance them further! Spring is becoming my favourite season already!

I'm quite into maxi dresses since the craze started as it hides my huge calves rather well. Teehee. Also, there's this flow that maxi dresses carry which gives off absolute femininity. Imagine Greek goddesses and beauty pageants.

So I saw this really chic maxi dress by Anna Sui on her Spring 2011 runway show. I'm deeply intrigue by the prints and accessories. And so I did my research on the styles and trends of spring/summer 2011. Well, tribal prints are IN. Also, bright amazon inspired prints and flora prints remain on top of the charts for fashion forward this year.

While reseraching, I saw this bright maxi dress calling out to me. I thought this could pull off as a formal or a casual outfit, depending on how you match the different possibilities!

So...need I say more? The satchel completes the outfit, whether it's for the office or for a date, or even for a beach day out! It is, like what Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother would say, LEGEN....wait for it...DARY!

And so for the last look, I thought, hey, I could do a look for chilling out, since there are looks for both work and play for the day. If you remember, I did mention above that there are quite a few colours picked for spring/summer 2011, ay? Well, here are some other colours that go really well with any skin tones in my opinion: Coral Rose, Lavender and Peapod.

So with all these amazing runway pieces I found in these shades, I did my own version, for occasions like a chillin' out session, or just a simple evening date.

So we have quite a bit of colours going on there, the deep and rich purple, the coral heels, the black, gold and silver...somehow it's lacking something to bring these all down togeher. The Tod's D-Styling Satchel just tones the loudness to a suitably elegant yet subtle wild level. Very very classy, whether it's for working ladies, ladies in their 20s or even ladies till their 50s! It's the youthful and wild heart that matters! *winks*

Well...as you can see, the Tod's D-Styling Satchel is really worth the buy! The endless possibilities and looks you create, it just sits in right with everything, from work to play to relaxation.

Meanwhile, I hope I've enlightened someone out there with these fashion tips I found. (:

I'm Wong and I go by my pseudo name, Jawsting. I'm currently an undergraduate from the School of Art, Design and Media in NTU and I major in Visual Communication. I'm not very tall, but I have big dreams. I strive to be an extraordinary designer/artist in time to come. I love playing with colours and mixing crazy things together to create something awesome, something I'd call an artpiece. I doodle a lot. I daydream a lot. I love traveling. But as much as I love the sights and sounds of the outside world, I like cuddling up in bed with a good novel or watch old-time favourite sitcoms and shows on my laptop. I'm quite a sucker for dramas and good shows.

I love to edit. I love photoshopping. I love to make things beautiful and coherent. I put a lot of my emotions into the works I do. I stay committed till the end. Which is why, much of the works I do or create, kinda link back to my life. My life as a girl, a designer, an artist, a daughter, a friend, a student, etc.

I find it rewarding after going through turbulence along the way and finally producing something that I can be proud of.

I'm a rather loud, cheerful and vibrant person. I have a, what you'd call, colourful personality. Alternatively, you might label me as an emotional designer bitch when I get too emotionally tied to my work.

I guess I just have this much to talk about for now.

Decided to redo the identity of FMD. Couldn't do much with the coffee stain thingy. So I decided to be bold and went ahead with a brand nu idea!

The envelope and letter head front are pretty much the same, minus the coffee mug stain.

Heh heh! This is where the change comes in! Added this new visual language into the entire branding process. Love it. Well, just in case you can't find the link between the big female head and the logo, think harder!

The female head is a zoom in of the lady smoke in the logo! See the link now? ;D

Decided that consumers of the coffee place will not be so interested in contacting the people behind the coffee place. So I went ahead to do 2 name cards. One for official purposes, and one that's designed specially for the consumers, has a discount function, too! This kinda prevents the consumers from throwing the card away, I guess? Haha.

Uniform is pretty straightforward. Don't want any fancyschmancies going on.
Simplicity at its best!

Hmmm, thought we might come up with some coffee powders of our own. How d'ya like those flavours?

Well, cups wise...nothing too elaborate. Incorporated the head just for the sake of the consistency in visual language.

AHA! THE MENU! My favourite! Was drooling while writing out those yummy flavoured coffees and treats! Can't wait to get started on experimenting with my girls! Just to name a few on the list (since they are all small and stuff in the picture), we have banana choco, toffee apple, popcorn, lollipop burst flavoured coffees and caramelised tea selections! Also, also! We have the good ol' munchies like apple cinnamon pretzels, tiramisu, etc! Mmmmmm.....

Not forgetting a system to thank loyal customers, came up with the loyalty card system! Each purchase of our coffee of the day or any signature brews earns one stamp! Collect 8 and redeem a free cup of coffee and tiramisu cake!

Geez, am getting really excited here. HAHAHA. This dream seems so far away and surreal! Hopefully we'll be able to raise that much money in time to come. ;D

The logo is finally done. After weeks of explorations and drawings. I was kinda enjoying the process of finding the right graphics and fonts for the logo as, after all, this cafe is my baby as well. I hope the rest of the other girls from four maxi dresses will love what I came up with.

four maxi dresses is a cafe specialising in coffee with a hint of saltiness. It's the new spot for relaxing and chilling out with pals after a long day of work. It's the brainchild of four travel buddies turned friends with a passion for maxi dresses and coffees.

four maxi dresses aims to open it's first store front in 2012. Meanwhile, we're still in the process of churning out the best salty coffees for everyone. (:

Confessions of a Dieter

Hey you guys! Sorry for the lack of updates! Was damn busy with school and assignments. Anyways, I'm back with a new project! It's called "Confessions of a Dieter". If you'd visited my diet site, you'd prolly know what this is all about. Well, if you didn't know what's happening, basically I just put myself thru 3 weeks of 3 different diets. Almost died along the way. Eheehee! But well, everything turned out well! So I made this entire diet journey and process into punch cards and a book. Included other stuff in the book as well! Things like interviews of people who went thru different diets, recipes, tips on dieting, risks of dieting and even what to and not to eat while dieting! It was really an exciting journey researching on this topic! Never knew dieting could be such a big thing! Woohoo!

Had it displayed in my school's gallery.

Do you like it? Personally I thought it was fun making the book. Heh!

Songkran in Panels

Hey all, painted these panels about the beautiful Songkran festival of Thailand. They illustrate day 0 till the last day of songkran.

Taken from the collateral I did for this mini exhibition:

"...Songkran being one of the most celebrated and sacred events in Thailand is much raved about throughout the world. The energy, spirit and vibrancy, can never be compared to by any other countries.

Water, being one of the most iis too often taken for granted by most. Knowledge of the symbolisms behind the Thai waters is slowly diminishing as the new generations take over. Hence, I'd like to take this opportunity to bring these symbolisms back to life once more throught he five panels of paintings...."

Cleansing

Cleansing of the house and inner self is done a day before the Songkran festival. This is done to ward off all evil spirits. Water here is seen as sacred, blessing the house and the people. This is also an action to wash off all bad elements that were accumulated throughout the past year.

The black background signifies the bad elements present before the washing, while the coloured splashes above represent the colours of the different element use to clean the house, such as flower petals, water, etc. A Thai monk lookalike represents the cleansing of one's mind off all evil thoughts while the falling waters waist down from the monk's body signifies the impurity leaving the body with the water flow.

Blessing the Buddha

On the first day of the Songkran festival, Thais visit the temples to bless and bathe the Buddha. They believe that by doing so, they can show their gratitude towards the Buddha's blessing on them throughout the past year and also get blessed by the Buddha for bathing him. Water here is seen as a form of bridge, connecting Man and god.

The white background signifies the fresh new start of the new year after cleansing oneself from the day before. In this picture, you see a man throwing colour splashes towards the buddha figure that is situated on the top right hand corner of the panel. This represents "blessing the buddha", and in turn gets blessed by the buddha. If you look closely, there are water splashes on the man's body as well. This signifies the pardon of one's sin from the buddha after he's made his respects.

Family Ties

After being blessed in the temples, Thais return home to prepare for the Rod Nam Dam Hua. This is a ritual involving the younger generations to pour scented water unto the palms of the older generation. This act signifies utmost respect and gratitude towards the older generations. In turn, the older generation blesses the younger ones back. Water here is seen also as a form of a bridge, connecting the different generations as one.

The girl above is the daughter while the one below who looks quite like the girl above is the mother. This shows the connection between the 2 generations through water and the union of the family. Colours of the splashes once again signifies the elements used for this ritual. Red signifies blood ties.

Fertility

After the family blessings, Thais go out on the streets to pour water unto others. The wetter they get, the better. Water is seen as a form of blessing and prosperity from the naga (holy water snake). Water also simulates the rain. The "heavier the rain, the better the harvest of the crops. Agriculture plays a large role in the livelihoods of the Thais. Rain (water), therefore, plays an important role to ensure the growth of the crops.

The background in the panel seem to be tainted with a hint of other colours like yellow and blue. This symbolises the blessings of others. The different splashes of red and purple paint signifies the increase in fertility within Thailand, as red simulates new and fresh blood while purple symbolises Thailand.

Rebirth

As the Songkran festival comes to an end, the Thais start a brand new year afresh, discarding all the bad that happened during the year before. The phoenix rising from all the turbulence of fire and trials represents the rebirth of a new year, a renewal of faith in life.

The last symbolism is hidden within the five panels. Each of these paintings are linked to the next. And this last symbolism is unity. Water in the Songkran context unifies the different generations within a family and affirms the family as one. It also ties the Thai community closer as they go on the streets to shower their blessing upon others. Songkran is a beautiful start of a new year in Thailand. Songkran is also the rebirth of an identity for the Thais. Water, being the key element of the festival plays an important role. It helps strengthen the hopes, beliefs and the faiths of the Thai community in their lives. Water has also evolved to be more than just a necessity in life. Water has a deeper meaning than just to keep one's survival.

This is Songkran, redefined in pictures. This is Songkran, redefined, by the symbolisms of the Thai waters.

Hi! Ok. So here is an update!
Did these for my Illustration class in school. The whole point is to design a character to promote a certain brand in a certain country!

I chose India and the uniqueness of the Kathakali dance as my inspiration. I worked my way through the research I'd done and found the main (hero) character rather intriguing. Hence, I used the expression, the emotions and the gestures to bring out the essence of the dance, and also of India. Chose BRANDS, because I think it's an essential for everyone, especially those individuals out there who are overworked. So I designed this character encompassing all the pointers I'd listed previously and worked my way through. With the tag line, "Even the gods need the essence to dance.", I created this poster to show the energy one BRANDS essence could do.

On top of the poster, we were required to do a souvenir/promotional item for the product. Made a book with colourful pages. Will update with the picture of the book soon. But for now, here are the pictures of the book cover!

PLAY DIDOT

Created this PLAY DIDOT thingie as part of a Typography Font Personality project. Task was to personify a font. So yeah. I dug out some significant characteristic of the font and made this magnetic thingie that allows you to play "dress-up" with the Didot head.

1. Beard+thinning hairline: The contrast between the thick and thinness of the font.
2. Eye: The font was used by CBS together with their logo for very long.
3. Golden hair: Elegant french modern font.

CITY/COUNTRY

Did another 3 pieces for Illustration class. This week, the theme was City/Country.
I did a bird, a piece of cowdung and a trapped person in the middle of a city life.
Awesomeness. Note the style!

THEME OF THE WEEK: BIRD/CAGE/MAN & CIRCUS
So basically, these were done for my illustration class. It's supposed to have a storyline. Haha.

It's about this man who remembers this girl whom he was in love with and still is very deeply. However this girl has long gone away from him and he felt very sad and wanted a bird to fly him to a remote area so as to die quietly. He is portrayed as a clown as he thought that life's such a joke and he just wanted to die, hence the rope. The pattern on the clown shoes symbolises the ironies and twists in lives, how one moment things seem normal, and next, shit happens. Finally, the floating pink balloon symbolises the joy he once had flying away from him, forever. Leaving him sad and gloomy.

So why is it called Isabel-inspired? Well, I had this singing course in university, and we once learnt this song called Isabel. It depicted a man who was deeply in love and he was willing to die for her, however if she ever leaves him, he would just....die and disintegrate...so....yar. Haha. You get the idea from here...

CHURCH CAMP TEE

Tissue

Few days ago, I had to make a series of fonts for my Typography class as an assignment. I decided to make use of tissue paper since the rubber shavings that I planned to use went missing. But seriously, thank God. They turned out better than expected.

Below is a pangram with a tinge of Singapore essence. It's part of the assignment, once again.
Pangram: A single sentence containing all the letters from A-Z, usually used to display fonts. An example would be the typical "a quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." .

Don't you just love the designs of adidas Original ® ? I know I do.
Had a task to complete. I needed to design an environmental design of a selected brand from Raffles City at the Raffles City compound. And naturally, I picked adidas Original ®.

Designed a bunch of colourful jumping human figures to be put outside Raffles City to illustrate the vibrance of the brand. Love the way my human figures turned out. Makes me feel the beat and the feel to JUST JUMP! (:

Ever wondered how fonts you see around Chinatown in Singapore can be manipulated?
Well, I had a project last year and we had a task to change the fonts of Chinatown into something awesome and different. Most importantly, something graphic-y and typo-ish.

So there, my project. (:
It's called Emotional Trap.
Stifled by the society. Unable to express oneself. He/she can only keep the anguish and the blues to oneself. The two contrasting posters are split into 4 parts and joined together to form a big picture. I'll post the hung poster photo up soon.

Picture below is not the final outcome of the 4 separated parts. But, close enough. Heh!

Was just playing around with my photoshop. Suddenly, El's (a girl from my major) digital art kinda inspired me to do some digital painting. Of course, mine didn't turn out as brilliant as hers, mine was just an old school mouse digital painting. Well...enjoy!

This was the initial stage. Don't know what in the world I was doing. Just went ahead and paint whatever I felt like. Colours were picked from the swatches. Hence the limit. It started out like that...

Was kinda multi-tasking while doing this digital art, but anyhooo, after both my friends said bye to me on skype, I went on full force towards completion...so TADA! This is the end-product! Not very nice I know, hair also not very hair-like, apologies.

But the least I hope was for it to look like a human. Ha. Yeah. Oh well.
I had fun. Hahaha.

So yeah, it kinda reminded me of my kiddy times, where I used to draw girls in different dresses and clothes. The only difference is that, right now, I'm drawing with more tech-y tools. Ha. (:
